Step 2: Write your Personal Essay

Please provide a personal essay covering the four areas as described below in the "Nightingale Nominee Guide for Personal Essay". The personal essay must be typed and NO MORE THAN 5 PAGES TOTAL. This can be done in Word format and directly mailed/emailed to the Colorado Springs AHEC representative. If you have questions about the essay or the letters of support, please contact your Director or Dean, to contact with a Nightingale Nominee Mentor. If one is not available, contact your Colorado AHEC office.

1. Professional Care Competence – Knowing the caring skills

  • Describe your professional skills and major position responsibilities. Include clinical skills, ethics/values, human relations skills, role-modeling, leadership, critical thinking skills.

2. Documented Outcomes – When caring made a difference

  • Describe how caring made a difference in your life and others. Include patient/client interactions, colleague interactions – both peer/supervisory, personal and life experiences. Use specific examples.

3. Participation in the Nursing Community – Caring for each other

  • Describe your professional activities/organizations: member, active participant, committee participant, officer/committee chair, awards/honors, employment related committees, practice related committees.

4. Beyond Nursing – Caring for self and community

  • Describe how you care for self and community. Family responsibilities, community involvement, volunteer services, projects that provide public education, activities which promote the public image of nursing, your non-nursing interests.

Step 3: Get Letters of Support

In addition to your personal essay, three additional letters supporting your nomination will be required. No more than 5 letters will be accepted. One letter must be from a member of administration at your facility or organization. Have the letters of support mailed/emailed directly to the Colorado Springs AHEC representative.

Do not include resumes, CVs or articles written by or about you. Do not include photos with your packet.
